VERMONT OPTOMETRIST AMONG THE FIRST IN THE U.S. TO INTRODUCE ELECTRONIC FOCUSING EYEGLASSES TO PATIENTS

Revolutionary Lens Technology Allow Glasses To Instantly Change Focus From Reading To Distance View With Tilt Of The Head

STOWE VERMONT – You recharge your cell phones, I-Pods and computers. Soon, you will be able to recharge your eyeglasses as well. Stowe optometrist, Dr. Robert C. Bauman, today announced that he has introduced emPower, the world’s first electronic focusing prescription eyewear, to Vermont patients. Designed for bifocal wearers who require special lenses to see both near and far, emPower electronically changes lens focus with a simple tilt of the head. It combines fashionable eyeglass frames with a microchip; composite lenses with a thin transparent LCD-like layer; miniature rechargeable batteries; and a micro-machine accelerometer to detect a wide range of immediate vision requirements. The microchip, micro-accelerometer, and miniature batteries are hidden inside the temples of specially designed emPower eyeglass frames. The transparent liquid crystal layer in each lens is able to electronically activate the reading portion or distance view as the wearer needs it. Turning the reading portion on or off happens virtually and instantaneously with the tilt of the head. There are no visible moving parts or noises. Wearers can operate the glasses in three different modes: manual on, automatic, and manual off. emPower eyeglasses look and feel like designer eyeglasses. They are shock resistant, waterproof and contain a rechargeable battery. One charge of the battery allows for two to three days of continuous operation.

Experts believe emPower will become the choice for millions of consumers that suffer from presbyopia, the diminished ability to focus on close objects that affects many starting around the age of 40. Unlike typical corrective bifocal lenses, emPower eyeglasses provide a wider field of view, less distortion and alleviate common side effects associated with progressive lenses and bifocal lenses currently used to address presbyopia. According to Dr. Bauman, lenses that magnify fine print can also distort vision when a wearer looks down. This can distort the view when descending a staircase or swinging at a golf ball. By electronically turning reading power on an off emPower will dramatically reduce vision compromises and improve the experience of prescription eyeglass wearers. “As an eye care professional, I have many patients who have long suffered from presbyopia. While most of our patients successfully adapt to bifocals and progressive lenses, emPower is designed to help patients make this transition quickly and more easily,” said Dr. Bauman. “I am pleased to be among the first optometrists in the United States to offer my patients an eye care technology that will undoubtedly change the way they think and feel about bifocals and improve their daily lives”. According to Dr. Bauman, emPower represents a quantum leap in optical technology that addresses the needs of a huge segment of the consumer market affected by presbyopia.”

The office Dr. Robert C. Bauman & Associates, PLLC is located at 1248 Waterbury Road in Stowe, Vermont. In addition to emPower, Dr. Bauman was among the nation’s first doctors of optometry to introduce corneal refractive therapy or CRT. CRT employs special contact lenses that reshape the eye in the same way an orthodontist uses braces to re-align teeth. Patients wear the lenses overnight, while they sleep, and remove them during the day. The result is clear vision without the need for glasses or surgery.
